Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital has welcomed new children and young people’s nurse, Natalie Cook, to its paediatric team.
Natalie joins with a wealth of experience working in paediatric medicine. Having studied a child health nursing degree at Bournemouth University, Natalie went on to work on a rotation programme at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London to gain experience across the children’s department. She then returned to Bournemouth to take the post at Nuffield Health.

As part of her new role, Natalie will work alongside lead nurse for children and young people, Linda Forsyth. Natalie’s job involves meeting children and their families in pre-assessment clinics, supporting with children’s vaccinations, blood tests and allergy testing, as well as preparing children for elective operations, such as tonsillectomies and knee reconstruction, and supporting with post-operative care on the ward.

Natalie Cook, children and young people’s nurse, said: “At Nuffield Health we work with children and their families to build positive relationships. We have a clinic every Tuesday with Dr Shortland where we meet our patients for pre-assessment, we then show them around our ward as we believe this will give them, and their parents, the chance to ask any questions they may have. Taking the time to get to know anyone that comes to see us really helps to lower anxiety levels about any upcoming procedures.

“I was drawn to return to Bournemouth and work for Nuffield Health as the hospital has an outstanding reputation, and I wanted to be a part of the improving children’s services.  My manager Linda was actually my mentor during my time at Bournemouth University, so it was a real bonus to find out I’d be working alongside her. She, along with Louise the hospital’s matron, are both incredibly supportive of new ideas. We’ve recently implemented our toy ‘ambulance’ box where children can pick a toy to take home with them after a visit to us. It might seem small, but by engaging with children in this way can really help to put them at ease and help to build a rapport.”

The paediatric team works with children from four weeks old up to 16 years of age. If you would like any more information regarding the full range of services the department provides please call: 01202 375032.
